English Class Shenanigans

I decided to reward my 11th grade ESL students with a movie.
Out of the dozen options, they chose National Treasure.
This movie took up two and a half class periods, so I knew that I had to have some sort of in-class activity to justify two hours of not doing classwork.

I put the students into groups, and then told them that they had to work together and recreate a scene from the movie.

A few of the groups chose the scene where Nicholas Cage has the Declaration of Independence and is running away from Sean Bean. Others chose to do the scene where they find the treasure.

One group decided to recreate the scene where Nicholas Cage goes to his dad's house, and Jon Voight ends up tied to a chair. In the movie, this scene is pretty borring. However, my students made it really fun, and actually found rope to tie up Matthew. Below are photos from that scene.

We have just started reading the book Holes in class. I promised my students that when we're done reading it, we can watch the movie. I think I'm going to have them recreate scenes from the book as well. Maybe if I take the students outside and somehow find a bunch of shovels....
